THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES AND HOW WE CAN PROTECT THEM

Reasons For Bees

Here are few reasons bees are important.

Bees are one of the most important polinators there is, because they enrich our food. All our plants, vegetables and herbs are dependant upon them depositing their pollen on our plants and it’s an ongoing process essential for growth. When they fly from each plant, they collect pollen and place it on others.

Bees are always looking for nectar, so they hunt it out in order to make honey, spendiing all their time going from one flower to the next. The term ‘busy bees’ is because they are total workaholics.

Easy Access For Bees

If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, plant single petal flowers. These attract bees as there is an easy access route for them to gather nectar. Too many leaves are harder for them to get to the nectar.

Flowering trees and shrubs attract bees, as do many herbs too. Sage is a great herb for bees as the flowers last quite a while and you can harvest the leaves, but leaving the flowers untouched for the bees.

Thyme is another good herb, as the vibrant purple, pink and white flowers attract polinators.

Lavender is a good one too when you want to attract bees…they love it. You can dry out some of the flowers to add to food, but always leave enough flowers for the bees. So many uses for this beautiful favourite in our gardens.

Protecting Bees

Please don’t swat them, because they will not hurt you unless you are a threat near a hive. Avoid spraying chemicals onto your plants and herbs, if they could, Bees would thank you, as would other wildlife. There are other ways to stop pests. One I use to stop slugs, is the beer in a saucer method, which has helped in the past, because they seem to like it. I wonder if slugs actually get a liitle tipsey. Now that is a debate all on its own :)
